Spelling Words Lesson Plan

Instructional Goals
Students will:
  • Be able to spell their ten weekly words correctly after hearing them alone, in a sentence, and repeated alone, again.

Instruction
  • Students will be given a spelling sheet at the beginning of the lesson.  Each sheet has ten lines for the students to neatly print each word.
  • I will ask each student to get their folders out and prop them up to use them as a makeshift wall.  This class is full of students who love to compare answers!
  • I will begin by slowly saying the word.  Once I have said the word I will then use it in a sentence.  At the end of the sentence I will once again repeat the word before moving on to the next word on the list.

how     now     cow     bow

about  pout    shout   out

mouse             count

  • Once I have given each word and a sentence to go with it, I will repeat each word one last time.
  • “The word is ‘how’ …I will show you how to do your homework…how.”
  • ‘The word is ‘now’ …I want you to come over right now…now.”
  • “The word is ‘cow’ …The farm has one cow…cow.”
  • “The word is ‘bow’ …When you see the Princess you must bow immediately.”
  • “The word is ‘about’ ...What do you want to know about frogs?”
  • “The word is ‘pout’ …The boy didn’t get what he wanted so he began to pout.”
  • “The word is ‘shout’ …The man began to shout at the bus as it drove away.”
  • “The word is ‘out’ …Please let the dog out when he barks.”
  • “The word is ‘mouse’ …The girl shouted when she saw a mouse in her room.”
  • “The word is ‘count’ …The student can count to 100.”
  • When I have finished the test I will begin to collect them so I can grade the papers during lunch.  The spelling tests will be handed back to the student that afternoon that way they can take them home over the weekend.  If the student struggled with the words they will know that they need to practice more the following week.

Content Standards
Language Arts Standard #6: students apply knowledge of language structure, language conventions, media techniques, figurative language, and genre to create, critique, and discuss print and non-print texts.

Instructional Material/Resources
  • Spelling Words
  • Spelling Test Paper
  • Folder for each student
Assessment
Teacher will:
  • View and assess student responses on spelling test.

Adaptations/Accommodations
For the students who are confused or didn’t hear the word that was read, I will repeat the word in a sentence along with repeating it again once I have read all ten words.

Reflection
Overall this spelling test went pretty well.  It really helped to have the folders up because there are a few students who like to check their work with others.  The “ow” “ou” word patterns seemed to be pretty easy for the kids to understand as they did fairly well on the test overall.
